ABOUT ME
Hey I'm Yara,
A singer and songwriter
I have always been pulled to create, whether it be through music, dance, or poetry.
With only one year of high-school left and a resolve to do something big before going out into the “real world,” my 16-year-old self decided to write and record a debut EP, titled Greyscale. What I originally thought would be an informal project became a two year recording and production project, largely funded by thousands of dollars in donations from supporters, and creative
guidance from a number of music industry professionals.
My debut EP rendered me “wise beyond her years” (Jermaine Hamilton, Studio Circle Recordings) and a
“singer [with] more emotion and talent than many two or three times her age” (Phil Russell, A Little Bit of Sol).
I decided to step back from releasing music to focus on dance & choreography and to get my degree from UC Berkeley.
Since graduating in 2019 with a BA in Performing Arts and Sociology, I found myself completely immersed in the music industry again.
In just the past year, I worked at every Bay Area music venue, with dozens of major record labels--Sony, Columbia, Universal, BMG; and with a roster of amazing artists--Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Ludovico Einaudi, Jenny Lewis, Charli XCX, and so many more.
Despite all of these incredible experiences, the biggest thing that I've learned is that nothing compares to the feeling of creating my own art—so I made this blog! I’ll be posting new music, poetry, and other musings here, and I’d be so grateful to have you along for the journey.
